    What is BakLok Advisors?

BakLok Advisors (伯樂識馬) is an executive communications coaching practice for senior professionals in finance, law and technology — and for the families whose names they carry into the room. It was formed in Hong Kong and is headquartered in Chongqing. The methodology was built inside institutional banking and global investment banks and descends from the tradition behind Black Isle, Templar Advisors and the Hatwell Group.

  2. 02

    Who founded BakLok Advisors?

Paul Kam, a Hong Kong-born communications coach with more than twenty years in the local city. His career spans commercial banking, debt and equity markets and Financial Institutions Group (FIG) coverage at Hong Kong's largest bank, across Australia, Hong Kong and Shenzhen. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, is a CPA Australia charterholder (8 years) and is a former SFC Licensed Representative (Licences 1, 4 & 9, to 2021). He is trilingual — English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Full profile →

  3. 03

What does the practice actually work on?

The disciplines are constant; the rooms differ. Board and regulatory communication. Investor and capital-markets pitching. Institutional sales communication. Interview and selection preparation. Media, platform and public speaking. And family-office and succession communication — where the managing director is also a son, and the founder who sold the company now chairs the family that inherits it. 4. 04

What lineage does the methodology come from?

It was inherited, then pressure-tested. The founder's communications formation came under a decorated equerry to Queen Elizabeth II, a former Goldman Sachs Chief Operating Officer and a former Morgan Stanley EMEA Head of Talent Development — the same tradition behind Black Isle, Templar Advisors and the Hatwell Group. Who does the practice work with?

Organisations, individuals and families — all reviewed with the same discretion. Individuals coached have worked at Magic Circle law firms, global investment banks, leading asset managers and ASX-listed companies. Every engagement is reviewed and accepted individually; availability is structurally limited; there is no standard pathway.

For family offices

  1. 06

Why would a family office need a communications practice trained in finance and law, rather than a public-speaking coach?

Because what goes wrong in those rooms is rarely the delivery — it is the framing of risk, ownership and intent, and only someone who has worked inside those disciplines can hear it. A speaking coach can make anyone sound polished. They cannot hear that a successor's briefing of the family council understates a liability, or that a founder's explanation of the trust structure will be received as evasion. In high-stakes rooms the discipline is precision about substance; polish is downstream of that, not a substitute for it.

  2. 07

What kinds of problems does the practice solve for family offices?

The moments where a family's affairs are decided aloud. The founder explaining to the next generation why the business was sold — and what the wealth is for now. The successor who must chair the family council before they have the runs on the board. The family office's first meetings with banks, boards and regulators — rooms where it will be judged as an institution long before it feels like one. And the quieter conversations between principals, siblings and generations where the real decisions are settled before any advisor drafts them. These rooms differ from a boardroom in furniture, not in consequence.

  3. 08

The family already has trusted advisors — lawyers, bankers, accountants. Why add a communications practice?

Because each of them optimises the document, and none of them owns the sentence spoken in the room. Advisors prepare the position; the principal must still deliver it — to the family, to the counterparty, to the regulator — and delivery is where the position is won or misunderstood. The practice does not replace the advisors. It is the discipline between their paper and your voice — and it is why the practice's founder was formed inside a bank's FIG seat rather than a lecture hall.

The basis

  1. 09

Where is the practice based, and where does it work?

Headquartered in Chongqing. The founder works from Chongqing about 75% of the time and Hong Kong about 25%, with full access to international platforms (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp) from both. Engagements can be delivered in either city, or globally and virtually as required.

  2. 10

What languages are engagements conducted in?

English, Cantonese and Mandarin. The same person speaks in all three — the founder is Hong Kong born, with more than twenty years in the local city: its schools, its neighbourhoods, its working Cantonese. His Mandarin was polished with a Brisbane-based Taiwanese tutor before deep cultural immersion in the Chinese Mainland.

  3. 11

    How does an engagement begin?

With an email. Every enquiry is reviewed personally by the founder — ptk@bak-lok.com, +852 6847 6261. If the brief is suitable, the practice responds directly. There is no intake form and no standard pathway.

  4. 12

    How are fees set?

Engagements are scoped individually. Group workshops, one-to-one and family engagements are all discussed directly, once the practice has confirmed fit.

  5. 13

    Are clients named?

No. Client identities are held in confidence. Sectors and roles are described as accurately as discretion allows, and no client should be inferred or invented from anything on this site.

Structure. Trust. Navigation. Emotion. The context changes. The discipline doesn't.
